The quality of the soil is extremely important. Don’t use soil from your garden or yard. You should invest in a top quality potting soil. Soil from you garden or yard will often have lots of clay and fungi that can inhibit the growth of your potatoes. The soil should also be fertilized with a slow release fertilizer designed for root vegetables. This will ensure quick growth and high production.
The most important aspect of growing potatoes in containers is ensuring that they have adequate sunlight and water. Potatoes need approximately six to eight hours of sunlight per day. Situate your containers facing south if possible to get the most light and make sure that you keep them watered well. The soil should be slightly moist at all times. Providing too much water will rot the roots so be careful and check the soil moisture before hand.
Planting your potatoes requires a little preparation in advance. Once you have purchased you seed potatoes, you will need to take some empty egg cartons and place your potatoes with the eyes up. Potatoes sprout from the eyes and this is the goal with this step. Place the egg cartons in a cool dark place and allow the potatoes to sprout until the sprouts are about an inch high. Now it is time to plant. The planting process is simple. Just take your sprouted potatoes and plant with the sprout up by pushing them down into the soil until the sprouts are just beneath the surface. They should be spaced about ten inches apart. Gently spread the soil over the top and you are done. Make sure that you do not overcrowd the container as you will be surprised at how many potatoes you get from just one plant.
